Decorating your home for Christmas is a sure-fire way to lift your spirits and put you in the mood for the upcoming festivities. After a challenging couple of years, it feels like there’s no better time to put the extra effort into ‘decking the halls…’ to spread a little joy!

The team at Beauchamp Park have put together their favourite ideas for giving your home some extra sparkle this festive season. Whether you prefer a traditional or contemporary look, one fail-safe approach is to pick a colour theme and style. For example, this year jewel-toned colours are really on-trend; think dark, sapphire blue, emerald green and ruby red to give your home a regal feel.

Metallics continue to be a mainstay – silver for a cooler, contemporary look and gold for a more traditional, warm and opulent feel. Mix either with varying shades of your chosen colour, and you’ll have an easy way to ensure you create a sophisticated look. If you like to be more daring and create a more eclectic look, simply add a couple of accent colours. But try to stick with your chosen colours and style to avoid looking completely haphazard!

The traditional Christmas tree remains a staple for many. This year possibly more so than previously as we look for the reassuring feel of habits from times gone by. You can match your Christmas tree with the décor. Choose baubles with various textured surfaces but in the same tones as the rest of the room. Dress your tree with delicate frosted fruits and stars as well as more traditional baubles.

But it’s not only the tree that can provide a festive focal point. If you have small children or animals, trees can be a potential disaster zone! A garland along the stair handrail can provide an interesting and glamorous focal point. If your stairs are visible from the front door, a garland will be a welcoming feature for visitors. Use a plain garland, tie it to the banister with ribbon or green garden string and hang it with decorations, much like you would a tree – but out of the reach of small hands and paws.

Christmas lunch is the highlight of the day and we obviously spend more time sitting around the table with family and friends than we would on most other occasions, so you want the table to look as inviting and stylish as possible. Lighting is key to creating a cosy ambience and festive atmosphere. The flickering of candlelight given off by floating candles in a simple glass bowl will bring a touch of festive elegance to any dinner table.  Think about using red berries, pine cones and garden foliage around mirrors and on mantelpieces or create your own table centrepiece using a large candle with a wreath around the base.

For many, the scent of Christmas is just as important as the decorations. While you can buy Christmas candles in many places, nothing beats making your own. Not only will the fragrance enhance your festive mood but so will the crafting. Tie cinnamon sticks with ribbons and create hanging ‘bells’ with dried oranges, pine cones and cloves – of course you can coordinate the ribbon with your colour theme – or use them on the wreath around the base of the candle for your table centre piece. Once you start down the creative path, the options really are endless.

Greet guests with a festive door wreath made from evergreen foliage, twigs and fresh berries.   For a modern alternative use fruits such as pears and pine cones, or a selection of nuts and berries.
