As working from home is becoming more and more popular, creating a calming office space you love is essential in improving your productivity whilst at work – particularly important as the days draw in and we all start spending more time inside again.

Read on to discover our top tips for transforming your work from home space this autumn.

Declutter

Before you begin the room transformation, organise your current work area. Clear out any unwanted items that are no longer needed, including paperwork and stationery. With all the time spent at your desk, it’s easy for the space to get cluttered and messy (do you really still need that to-do list from last month!?). Ensure that you create a dedicated spot for your papers and files – it will make life easier and the room more aesthetically pleasing!

Evaluate the space

Assess the room you are working with and evaluate how to use the space efficiently. Lighting is a key factor in keeping you focused throughout the day, so ensure that you place the desk in a well-lit spot, to keep you feeling wide awake and ready to work! Be mindful of having a bright light directly behind you as this can create a glare on your computer screen. If you can, try and put your desk in front of a window – not only great for your wellbeing, but also perfect lighting for those Zoom calls!

Kit it out

As you will be spending a number of working hours in your home office, it can be worth buying good-quality office equipment. Furniture that is designed to support your body whilst you work will make your 9-5 more comfortable, whilst taking care of your body long term. Purchase an adjustable office chair and desk to avoid being hunched over all day long, or a proper computer mouse and wrist support to alleviate any arm and hand pain!

Personalise your office

Adding personality to your office can increase productivity and creativity – why not hang colourful artwork on walls? Or decorate the space with plants and flowers? Displaying greenery will add style and life to your office – houseplants have even been found to boost productivity by 15%*. If you have a furry friend who accompanies you in the office, be sure to purchase pet-friendly plants, such as Purple Waffle Plant or Chinese Money Plant.

Make it autumnal

We sat down with Rob from Dapa, the interior designers behind our show home at The Arbour, to ask his top tip for making your working from home space more seasonal.

Rob advises, “As we head towards Autumn and the nights draw in, it’s time to freshen up your Teams background with something warm and vibrant. Nothing works better than a punchy orange like Coat Paint’s Mezcal, described as “an intoxicating blackened orange. A warming pop of colour that feels effortless and works a treat with most other colours.”

“As the garden starts to change in colour and the greens fade away, bring nature indoors and adorn your workspace with real planting. Succulents work best as they are low maintenance, why not try a ‘Hedgehog Aloe’ with its punchy orange flower to compliment your new paint.”
