Starting your new home search can throw up lots of questions – everything from ‘is this location right for me?’ through to ‘how much will my monthly mortgage payments be?’. Our Sales Teams – and recommended specialists- are always on hand to answer and advise wherever they can, and you can find the answer to a lot of questions about Shared Ownership in particular in Our Complete Guide.

One thing the team are asked on a regular basis is, ‘can I have a pet in my Shared Ownership home?’, so we’ve put together a bit of a summary below to help you get the answers you’re after.

We care about the wellbeing of all our residents, furry friends included, which is why in most cases you can keep up to two dogs, and/or up to two cats, or a reasonable number of small animals in your home. These guidelines might vary where we aren’t the freeholder of the building, but it will all be clearly outlined in your lease agreement.

We of course encourage all residents to be responsible pet owners and to ensure that their four-legged friends do not cause a nuisance to neighbours – which is why we ask all owners to complete a Pet Dog Registration Form. It’s very straight forward and doesn’t take long at all.

Almost all our homes are now pet-friendly, and we love welcoming new residents – both in human and animal form – to our developments.

We caught up with a few of our customers to get the inside scoop on what they love about having a pet in their new home.

Eoin moved into his two-bedroom London Living Rent apartment at L&Q at Lexington Gardens in October 2023, with Australian rescue dog, Bowie.

I grew up living near a river so that was a big bonus for me to have proximity to the Thames and the nature of Battersea Park. There’s plenty to do within walking distance and we can also easily get into town on foot or bike.”

Remya bought a 25% share of a two-bedroom apartment at Addiscombe Oaks, Croydon.

“East Croydon is a great place to live and has lots to offer. My balcony is really big – my son loves playing out there with our dog. We’ve got so much on our doorstep, too – we love it. We have everything we need here; the location is perfect.”

Tom, Liam and their adorable Staffordshire Bull Terrier bought an L&Q home in Ashlawn Rise, Rugby.

There are plenty of places for countryside walks, which our adopted ten-year old Staffie loves, as she can run around off the lead! Our dog also loves having space to play at home, whether inside or out.”

What restrictions are in place for pets in Shared Ownership homes?

Our residents’ safety is a top priority at L&Q, so we have some general restrictions to keep both animals and residents comfortable and harm-free.

That is why certain animals, such as those listed under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act or any endangered species, are not suitable to be kept as pets in our homes, to protect residents and animals alike.
