A brand-new community space for the village of Whalley opened last week, with the Whalley Old Grammar School Community Centre officially launching its mezzanine floor thanks to help from L&Q, which provided grant funding to a number of local initiatives in 2023.

The charity received £35,000 last spring, which allowed it to convert what was previously unused roof space into a second room for local residents and groups to hire and use. The mezzanine, which is now being used for everything from yoga and belly dancing classes through to youth clubs, was officially opened by Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire Amanda Parker of Browsholme Hall, with over 60 guests attending.

Terry Hill, Chairman at the Whalley Old Grammar School Community Centre, comments; “Since winning the Community Gold Award last year, we are now incredibly proud to have this fantastic new space that provides a multipurpose room for the whole Whalley Community to enjoy.”

As well as the Community Centre, as voted for by the local community, Whalley Sports Club was also awarded funding to transform its changing facilities to encourage a more diverse and inclusive membership, while Whalley in Bloom, a community group that undertakes general gardening and planting tasks around the village, also received a significant donation.

L&Q is working in partnership with Lovell Homes to deliver the popular Whalley Manor development just outside the village centre in the Ribble Valley, which was recently named as the UK’s Happiest Place to Live by The Guardian.
