Living in Cambridge: Area Guide
Home to world-class education, breathtaking architecture and Oppenheimer, Cambridge is a highly desirable city that balances historic charm with forward-thinking innovation. Whether you’re drawn to its beautiful heritage, growing science and tech sector or the balance of green space and connectivity, the area offers a setting that supports modern, everyday living.
L&Q has two developments in Cambridgeshire: Marleigh and Darwin Green, both thoughtfully positioned to make the most of the city’s transport links, open spaces and established neighbourhoods. Together, they offer collections of contemporary homes, allowing you to put down roots in one of the UK’s most sought-after cities.
Places to eat and drink
Cambridge is a foodie’s paradise, offering everything from well-known favourites to independent gems. The Pint Shop on Peas Hill offers an impressive selection of craft beers alongside seasonal British dishes, including their take on a Scotch egg! Slabs of mouthwatering Detroit pizza can be found at Scott’s All Day, while The Folio Bar & Kitchen brings a refined touch, serving modern British plates in an elegant, light-filled space.
Coffee, brunch and casual bites are equally well-catered for across the city. Bould Brothers Café is a go-to for expertly brewed coffee and on-the-go pastries. Café Foy offers a bright, independent feel, serving delicious toasties, light brunches and small plates in the evening. Hot Numbers Coffee, a Cambridge staple, serves speciality coffee alongside fresh pastries and light lunches, making it a reliable choice whether you’re meeting friends or working remotely for a few hours.
If you’re looking for a classic pub setting, Cambridge doesn’t disappoint. The Eagle Pub is perhaps the most famous, steeped in history and known for its traditional interiors and well-kept ales. Located on the grassy banks of the River Cam, The Mill is another iconic choice, offering relaxed waterside views and hearty pub food.
Transport and Connectivity
Cambridge is exceptionally well-connected, whether you’re commuting or heading out for a weekend away. Cambridge Station provides direct rail services to London King’s Cross and London Liverpool Street, with journey times from around 55 minutes, making the capital easily accessible for daily travel. For travel further afield, London Stansted Airport is around 30 miles away and reachable by both car and direct train.
Within the city itself, Cambridge is famously cycle-friendly, with extensive bike lanes making it easy to get around without a car. Both developments are well placed for access to the city centre. Darwin Green is approximately 1.5 miles from central Cambridge, making it easily reachable on foot or by bike in just 17 minutes. Marleigh sits around three miles east of the city centre and offers similarly convenient connections, with Cambridge North Station just over 10 minutes away by bike.
Green escapes
Living in Cambridge means you’ll never be short of picturesque spots, riverside strolls and expansive green space. The River Cam weaves through the centre, perfect for weekend walks, and you can also find space in the city with Parkers Piece and Midsummer Common, which are ideal for picnics, informal sport or just getting some lunchtime headspace. Closer to Darwin Green, you can enjoy 15 acres of open space, while public parks, woodland walks and allotments surround Marleigh’s location.
Shopping
Modern retail convenience sits alongside historic architecture. The Grand Arcade provides over 60 premium and high street retailers, including Oliver Bonas, John Lewis and The White Company. Independent shops, market stalls and boutiques can also be found throughout the city centre, and Cambridge Market Square hosts traders selling everything from street food to fresh produce and handmade goods.
